There's a lady here who I call Olga ,( not real name) who I've observed over the course of the year attending many of the same events as myself: lectures, conferences, etc. But after a while i noticed she only attends or remains for the events that have free food.
And she always positions herself so that she will be first in line once the lecture concludes. Did I mention she is very "large bodied" to put it nicely. As the year has progressed she has gotten more and more brazen in her behavior. Sometimes if she can get away with it, she'll show up just for the food without trying to learn anything .
Sure, we all enjoy good free food, but at least show a little interest in the presentation. A lot of the time is not always particularly interesting for the average lay person, but you can always find something to learn more about.
If you're at the point where your sole purpose for being there is food, you are in the wrong place. Get a job working in the dining service. They eat better than any of the visitors. You can take home extras too. But respect the sanctity of academia. Don't be a pig ๐๐
